Mount Pleasant businessman Howard Chalmers announced he will seek a seat on Mount Pleasant Town Council.

Chalmers, 37, is a software design manager at Blackbaud and expects to utilize his experience managing people and technology projects to confront the challenges facing Mount Pleasant over the next four years.

“Mount Pleasant is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, and as such, I expect it to continue to grow,” he said. “We must prepare for and manage that growth guided by a focus on the services that Mount Pleasant residents have come to expect and on the cultural and historical resources that add so much to our quality of life. We need to look for creative ways to continue our economic and community development efforts while reducing traffic congestion and ensuring that our existing small businesses recognize their importance to the town.”

Chalmers sees the potential for partnerships between the town, private enterprise, and nonprofit organizations to provide resources to new and existing small business as a key to successful community development.

He also understands the need for balance.

“As a design manager, I am constantly faced with evaluating multiple priorities with limited resources” Chalmers said. “My goal is to find the solution that provides the best value for the customer in terms of time, cost, and features. Based on that experience, I can play a valuable role in helping Mount Pleasant create and implement a plan that ensures all our citizens have a livable community in the future.”

Chalmers and his wife Lorrie, a registered nurse, have been married for 11 years and are the parents of three young sons, the oldest of which is a 1st grader at Laurel Hill Primary School. Chalmers is a 1994 graduate of Auburn University and holds a BS degree in Management Information Systems. He serves as a deacon at Eastbridge Presbyterian Church and has also volunteered as an assistant coach for FUNdamental soccer and t-ball through the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department.

Chalmers is a member and has served on the boards of directors of several nonprofit organizations focused on historic preservation, through which he has been actively involved in preserving and protecting the area’s historic assets.
